The Best Medicine

Here's the prequel to this post.

So, I've been preoccupied with laughter recently. I'm gearing up for a show with 1812 Productions, a theatre company here in Philadelphia that does nothing but comedic work. It's a frighteningly exciting prospect, especially because this show will be conceived and constructed by the company of actors who will also be performing.

I've never done this type of work before, and I'm incredibly eager to get started. Of course, I've watched stuff like The Daily Show or The Chapelle Show and laughed until I was blue in the face (which is especially difficult for me). And as I take it in, I'm constantly reminding myself of the levels of brilliance, awareness, and humility is takes to convert dense and weighty sociopolitical concepts into workable, repeatable humor. Jon Stewart describes it as "articulating an intangible". To witness someone grapple with these essential ideas of the human condition, observe the irony or absurdity in these ideas, and connect those aspects to almost non sequitur but oddly congruent bit of digestible and unexpected storytelling is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

Awe-inspiring, and infectious. In fact, try watching this without laughing. It ain't easy.

Planking: The Line Between Stupidity and Brilliance

Judging by the number of views this video has, I'm way behind.

I came across this fad last night while perusing one of the many message boards I regularly frequent. Like many, my first thought was, "That's about the dumbest thing I think I've ever seen." It just seemed like something people do with too much time and not enough reading material.

But then I began looking around for more examples of this game to get a sense of its scope. What I found was, quite frankly, some of the most brilliant and hilarious photos I think I have ever seen. Here's a sample.

As of now, this is as close as humanity has come to participating in a worldwide scavenger hunt. It won't be long before we see a plank at The Vatican, planking on the Serengeti, or the Tiananmen Square Plank. It inspires us to get out and see our world with a new sense of wonder and adventure, then interact with that world with a unique sense of humor and aesthetic. Because you have to admit, it's oddly artistic to see someone lying face down in public.

The Average Rap Battle

To the uninitiated, I would suggest doing two things before watching this video.

1. Go watch some actual emcee battles to see how it really goes on.

2. Warm up your sense of humor.

Walta's Quickie Video Blog

So it's 12:30. I just got home. I have to leave again in six hours. So there will be no long rants from me tonight.

In cases like these, I am thinking I will snatch videos that Walta's posted on her facebook page and throw them up for your amusement. She has a rich, albeit eccentric sense of humor. I love it.
